Why General Paediatrics needs a voice

In the late 1990s, about half of consultant paediatricians worked in district general hospitals, mostly as generalists. Yet many new consultant posts were sub-specialist roles, and the “decline” of General Paediatrics was widely discussed.

A group of General Paediatricians set out to redress that balance. Their sessions at the 2002 RCPCH Spring Meeting drew 67 abstracts, and the group that formed there became the BAGP.

Today we work with the RCPCH to recognise General Paediatrics as a specialty in its own right, and collaborate with research groups such as GAPRUKI.
